I can still remember elementary school like it was yesterday. I loved school! One of my favorite days each was was going to the library. I can recall walking into the library, sitting on the floor as the librarian shared a read aloud, and then being able to wander about the library looking for just the right book to check out and take with me. The Newbery Award list was my first attempt at reading a list of books and created a challenge for me.
Hatchet, Ramona, and the Indian in the Cubpboard all bring back memories of childhood.
As teachers, we are given the wonderful opportunity of introducing our children to these same pieces of literature that we enjoyed. These truly are the classics. Whether it be through read alouds or the kids reading these books on their own, I think each book should find a place in your classroom.
Don’t be afraid to go back and reread these books as an adult either! Reading A Wrinkle in Time will bring back all sorts of good memories.
