Sunday Funday

It’s Sunday morning here in Missouri. I’ve been up since 6:30, did my 3 mile run through my small town, and now I’m back in my apartment on Main Street thinking about the upcoming school week. I will soon be heading to school to work on my plans for my 22 second graders for the week.

I’m trying out one of the model Common Core curriculum units on the DESE website. If you aren’t familiar with the model curriculum units, these are units developed in reading, math, science, and social studies. They are perfect, but it gives you a good idea of integrating ELA (English Language Arts) in all subject areas. My school is in a transition between the Missouri GLEs (Grade Level Expectations) and the Common Core State Standards. These unit plans show what GLEs and CCSS are covered. The curriculum unit provides unit with a unit template, assessments, and instructional activities that can be printed. Such a great resource!

I’ve picked Understanding Place Value to 1,000 to start my year with. This unit involves a lot hands on card games practicing identifying place value. The kids will also be keeping a Math Journal or Essential Vocabulary Notebook. Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr is used as a read aloud throughout the unit, which I am excited about!

I’ve got two episodes of Law and Order to watch and another cup of coffee to drink before I head to work. Enjoy your Sunday!
